Skin Concerns
Pigmentation &
Sun Damage
Clearer-looking skin starts with knowing what the pigment actually is.
What Type of Pigmentation Are We Treating?
Common concerns include: sun spots; freckles; mottled photodamage; post-inflammatory marks; melasma-type pigmentation; and generally uneven tone.
Some pigmentation responds particularly well to light treatment. Some needs a different strategy. And some pigmented lesions should be medically checked before any cosmetic treatment is considered.
How Does Lumecca Treat Pigmentation?
Lumecca uses Intense Pulsed Light. For suitable pigmentation, the light is preferentially absorbed by melanin within the target and converted into controlled heat. One of the most important things to know is that treated pigment can initially become darker. It may look more noticeable before it gradually clears. That is an expected response in appropriately selected pigmentation, not necessarily a sign that treatment has made it worse.
Melasma behaves differently from ordinary sun-induced pigmentation and should not automatically be treated with IPL. A more considered management strategy may be required.
A lesion that is new, changing, irregular, symptomatic or uncertain should not simply be treated because it is cosmetically unwanted. Where appropriate, medical assessment comes before aesthetic treatment.
Treatment Options
For many clients, the decision comes down to what kind of pigment is present and what else is happening within the skin.
Sun Spots & Superficial Photodamage
Lumecca IPL
May be particularly suitable for appropriately assessed superficial brown pigmentation including sun spots and freckles.
Pigmentation with Texture & Photoageing
NeoGen Plasma
Where pigmentation sits alongside fine lines, rougher texture and broader skin ageing, NeoGen Plasma may sometimes form part of a wider corrective strategy.
Will Pigmentation Come Back?
It can. Treatment can improve existing visible pigmentation, but it does not permanently remove your ability to produce melanin. UV exposure can create new pigmentation. Some pigmentary conditions are recurrent by nature.
This is why treatment planning should include photoprotection, appropriate skincare and realistic maintenance, not just the procedure itself.
A simple way to understand the difference: Lumecca primarily targets unwanted colour. NeoGen primarily resurfaces and remodels skin. If the dominant issue is superficial brown pigment, Lumecca may be the more direct route.

Common Questions About Pigmentation
Is IPL good for sun spots?
For appropriately selected superficial UV-related pigmentation, IPL can be a highly relevant treatment option.
Why do brown spots get darker after IPL?
The targeted pigment can darken before gradually clearing over subsequent days.
Is Lumecca suitable for melasma?
Melasma requires more caution and should not automatically be treated in the same way as ordinary sun spots.
